Getting the Rotation by DC Motors

Getting the Rotation by DC Motors
Getting the Rotation by DC Motors

We use motors in various places in our daily life, this shows how important motors are in our life. Motors are of the most loved by all the people who loves electronics. Direct current (DC) motors are one of the first machines which were used to convert electronic power to machinery power.

DC motors uses magnetic fields to convert electronic energy to mechanical energy. These motors are everywhere in our life whether it those tiny robots or larger industrial robots to almost every vehicle which gets their torque from these motors.

Small and large sized motoring industries features DC motors for their wide range of functionality and because of wide use of DC motors in various applications, there are many type of DC motors suitable for different industries and different areas.

Permanent Magnet (PM) motors are of the most used DC motors, these motors normally produce great torque start and gives good speed regulation but the torque is limited so it cannot be used in large industries, it is normally used in low horsepower machines and applications. Permanent Magnet motors are physically small-sized motors.

Series DC motors are one of those motors which are used in high volume everyday items such as hand drill and common kitchen appliances. The field is covered with few turns of a large wire carrying the full armature current.

Series DC motors gives high torque but it cannot regulate speed and can even be damaged by running with no load. These motors can work well on both AC and DC power. These limitations mean that they are not a good option for variable speed applications.

Shunt DC motors comes into the category of self excited DC motors in which the field winding are shunted or connected to the armature winding of the motor in parallel way. These motors give good speed regulation and simplified reversing controls too.

Compound DC motors are similar to Shunt DC motors; these motors give good starting torque but may give problems during use in variable speed applications.
